Requirements If Hired:
- Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of the training.
- Must obtain medical clearance for arduous duty and complete a physical fitness test which involves carrying a 45 lb. pack for 3 miles in 45 minutes or less.
- A pre-employment drug test may be required with some employers
Additional Information:
This wildlands fire training will certify individuals to apply for seasonal employment with various government agencies, contractors, and organizations. Completion of the training does not guarantee employment for the upcoming fire season.
Ability to travel out of state for up to two weeks at a time may enhance local seasonal opportunities.
Emergency Firefighters are on-call or as needed, during the Spring and Fall fire season, with opportunity to travel during the summer and winter months.
Local/regional agency opportunities may include the Bureau of Indian Affairs, US Fish and Wildlife Service, MN Department of Natural Resources and others as they become available.
This training will include a segment on cultural burns. In northern Minnesota, this would include fire as a means of enhancing wild blueberries, juneberries, and prairie restoration. Other types of burns include wildlife burns and invasive species controls. There will be some cultural information on the role of fire with local Indigenous People.
